Game design and illustrated animations

This first-semester project was my first proper introduction to JavaScript and CSS animations. This was the first time I ever use Adobe Illustrator, and so creating all the game elements was a steep learning curve and really allowed me to intensely develop my Illustrator skills.

Rocketman is based on the story of Elton, who dreams of going to the moon. But being an astronaut isn’t cheap! So sitting in his cardboard rocket, he decides to get to the moon using only up-cycled materials and stardust as the fuel. Elton has built a massive catapult to help launch him into outer space. After 30 seconds he will have to turn on his engine. Collect 100 litres/points in 30 seconds for his engine, or he will fall back to earth.

Since the character is based off a real person, it saved me time in brainstorming since I had already a face to base it off. However that also meant that I had to make sure my character resembled and was recognisable to the real Elton John. Using an image of him as a reference, I created the face of my character. Using circles for all the features, except the nose. The nose was made with a rounded edge triangle, which was duplicated to create its shadow. The skin and hair colours were directly eye-dropped from the reference photo!
